Specialist Anaesthetist

  • Dr. Laurie Poon is a highly experienced specialist anaesthetist with over two decades of expertise in anaesthesia, intensive care, and emergency medicine. After completing his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and extensive training in Melbourne, Dr. Poon received his specialist qualification from the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1999.
  • He has a diverse background, including serving as an ambulance officer and working as a Retrieval Aeromedical Evacuation Physician with the Victorian Medical Emergency Adult Retrieval Service (MEARS), where he was involved in the critical care of patients being evacuated by helicopter and aeroplane.
  • Dr. Poon holds dual postgraduate qualifications in perioperative echocardiography and uses ultrasound techniques in his practice for regional nerve blocks and vascular access, as well as heart monitoring. Currently, he works across both public and private sectors, including St Vincent’s Health and as a senior cardiothoracic anaesthetist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
  • In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Poon is passionate about education and has developed the Epworth CICO & Airway Team Training course to train anaesthetists and nurses in managing difficult airway situations. He regularly speaks at conferences in Australia and internationally, focusing on advanced airway and regional anaesthesia techniques, as well as the use of ultrasound in anaesthesia. Dr. Poon also contributes to volunteer medical missions in the Pacific.
